WHAT IS AGING-IN-PLACE?

Safely remaining in your home regardless of age or ability level is known as “ aging in
place” . This often can be achieved through adjustments to your living space. As most people mature, their physical abilities change and they will need to modify their home in order to improve access and maneuverability.

WHAT IS A CERTIFIED-AGING-IN-PLACE (CAPS) SPECIALIST?

The CAPS designation identifies remodelers who are trained to help retirees and
older adults remain in their homes safely, independently and comfortably, helping them to continue to live in a familiar environment throughout their maturing years. It can also mean remodeling to create an additional living space on an existing home to allow an aging parent to live an independent life adjacent to their children or building a new home to aging in place specifications. A Certified Aging in Place Specialist can also help clients evaluate their living situations in order to make the decisions that are right for them.

The CAPS program was developed in collaboration with the NAHB Research Center,
the AARP and the NAHB Seniors Housing Council. The CAPS curriculum covers a variety of information tailored to aging-in-place home modifications, including background on the needs of the older adult population; appropriate aging-in-place remodeling projects; overcoming barriers; codes and standards, as well as product ideas and resources.

Aging in Place modifications can range from simple common sense adjustments to major
modifications of your present home. It can mean building a new age-friendly home. It can also include remodeling to create an additional living space on an existing home, perhaps to allow an aging parent to live an independent life adjacent to their children.

Whatever you choose to do, it can make your life easier and safer. Whether it’ s a barrier
free bathroom and kitchen or a new living space, with the help of a trained and certified aging-in- place (CAPS) specialist, it is possible to become more self-sufficient, more confident and independent as you mature in surroundings of your own choosing. I stand ready to help you in making these decisions.
